Significant Rise in International Mail Costs
January 2008 — IMEX, the Pitney Bowes company that provides international mail-forwarding services for Dartmouth Printing Company and United Litho, Inc., has just announced a substantial increase in its international postage rates. The increase, which will take effect immediately for DPC customers and February 4, 2008, for ULI customers, is due largely to the weakening of the U.S. dollar, as well as to annual increases by postal authorities around the world and rising costs of both transportation and other business expenses.
The biggest increase — 15 to 17.5% — comes in Publication Air rates to Canada for over 50 pieces per title, due largely to the exchange rate between the United States and Canada. In addition to the 15% decline in the value of the U.S. dollar since this time last year, Canada Post has announced an increase of approximately 5%. The Publication Air rate for fewer than 50 pieces per title is considerably lower because the mail is routed as ISAL (international surface air lift), rather than through Canada Post.
